Finances Feeling Out of Control?

How to Reclaim Power When Life Feels Out of Control

When you finally decide to get your finances in order, you rarely start from a place of calm. Usually, you’re starting from the middle of a "chaotic mess."

The debt feels loud, the bills are piling up, and the sheer volume of "stuff" to fix can make you want to pull the covers over your head. When we feel overwhelmed, it’s usually because we are trying to carry the weight of things that aren't actually ours to hold.

To find your footing, you have to perform a Chaos Audit.

1. Separate the "Weather" from the "Work"

Think of your life like a ship in a storm. You cannot control the wind, the height of the waves, or the gray sky (the Weather). If you spend your energy screaming at the clouds, the ship sinks. You can only control the rudder, the sails, and your own breathing (the Work).

It is wise to act based on the situation at hand, not the one you wish you were in.

2. Draw Your Circle of Control

The fastest way to lower your cortisol levels is to stop obsessing over the "Out of Control" column.

What You CANNOT Control

Other people’s opinions of your debt

How others react to your choices

The economy or interest rates

The mistakes you made last year

What You CAN Control

Your internal self-talk and grace

Your use of time for good

Your decision on which bill to pay today

Your facial expression and attitude today

3. Execute for Today Only

One of the biggest traps in financial recovery is trying to solve "Five-Year-From-Now" problems with "Today" energy. It’s exhausting.

Instead, execute your day based only on today’s situation.

  • Can you control your negative thoughts for the next hour? Yes.

  • Can you choose to move your body for 20 minutes to clear your head? Yes.

  • Can you make one phone call to a creditor or one intentional grocery choice. Yes.

Empowerment is a Choice

Concentrating on what you can control isn't just a productivity hack; it’s an act of rebellion against chaos. Every time you focus on your own decisions, your own words, and your own goals, you take a brick back from the wall of mess and start building a foundation of power.

Everything you are experiencing right now is temporary. By focusing on the rudder instead of the storm, you ensure that your situation will change.
